The story

The foundation stone was laid in 1918 and the museum opened in 1928 to house finds from the excavations of Sir John Marshall at Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taxila was a great city of learning for over a thousand years and was visited by Alexander the Great in 326 BC.

The collection comes from the three ancient cities of Bhir Mound, Sirkap and Sirsukh and from Buddhist monasteries such as Dharmarajika and Jaulian, so you can see the objects and then walk to the places they were found.

Don't miss

  1. Gandhara Buddha and Bodhisattva sculptures in stone and stucco
  2. Gold jewellery and household objects from Sirkap
  3. Coins of Indo-Greek, Scythian, Parthian and Kushan rulers
  4. The ruins of Jaulian and Dharmarajika a short drive away
