Opened in 1855 on Berlin's Museum Island, the Neues Museum was bombed in the Second World War and stood in ruins for decades. The architect David Chipperfield rebuilt it, keeping the scars of war, and it reopened in 2009.
It is home to Berlin's Egyptian collection and its museum of prehistory, including one of the most famous portraits ever made.
