The story

Founded in 1865 and moved in 1894 into the Mughal-Gothic building on The Mall designed by Sir Ganga Ram, the Lahore Museum is the oldest and one of the largest museums in Pakistan. Rudyard Kipling's father, John Lockwood Kipling, was one of its early curators, and the museum appears in the opening pages of the novel Kim.

Its galleries move from the Indus Valley and Gandhara through the Mughal and Sikh courts to the colonial era and the Pakistan Movement. The Gandhara collection is the jewel: few places on earth show so clearly how Greek, Persian and Indian art met along the old Silk Road.

Don't miss

  1. The Fasting Buddha (Fasting Siddhartha), a Gandhara masterpiece from Sikri
  2. Mughal and Pahari miniature paintings
  3. Coins from the Indo-Greek kings to the Mughal emperors
  4. The Zamzama gun, "Kim's Gun", standing outside on The Mall
