The story

The museum began in 1907 in the Victoria Memorial Hall, a building that mixes British, Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic styles. Peshawar was the capital of the Kushan king Kanishka, and the museum holds one of the largest collections of Gandhara art in the world.

Its relief panels tell the Buddha's life story scene by scene, from his birth to his death, and other galleries show the arms, crafts and clothing of the peoples of the frontier.

Don't miss

  1. Gandhara relief panels of the life of the Buddha
  2. Standing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from Takht-i-Bahi and Sahri-Bahlol
  3. Ethnographic galleries of the frontier tribes
