The story

Swat was the ancient land of Udyana, full of Buddhist monasteries and stupas, and pilgrims came here from as far as China. The Swat Museum holds Gandhara sculpture from sites across the valley, many excavated by Italian archaeologists.

The museum was badly damaged by a bomb in 2008, then rebuilt and reopened with help from Italy and Japan. Today it shows Buddhist sculpture, local jewellery, textiles and woodwork.

Don't miss

  1. Gandhara sculpture from Butkara and other Swat sites
  2. Relief panels from Buddhist stupas
  3. Swati jewellery, embroidery and carved wood
  4. Stupas and rock carvings in the surrounding valley
