Founded in 1753 from the collection of the physician Sir Hans Sloane and opened in 1759, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. Its collection of around eight million objects covers every continent.
Many objects came to London during the age of the British Empire, and the museum is at the centre of debates about returning them, from the Parthenon sculptures to the Benin Bronzes.
