Inca builders shaped granite blocks so precisely that they fit together without mortar. Terraces carved into the slopes grew crops and held the mountain together in heavy rains.
The site was probably a royal estate. It was abandoned around the time of the Spanish conquest, and the conquistadors never found it.
Local farmers always knew it was there, but it became famous worldwide after the American explorer Hiram Bingham was guided to it in 1911.
