Babur missed the gardens of Central Asia so much that one of the first things he did in India was lay one out. His descendants made the charbagh, a garden divided into four by water channels, a symbol of their rule.
You can still walk in many of them: Bagh-e Babur in Kabul, where the first emperor is buried; the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, built by Shah Jahan; Nishat and Shalimar Bagh on the shores of Dal Lake in Srinagar; and the gardens around Humayun's Tomb in Delhi.
Go early in the morning, when the fountains run and the light is soft, and you will understand why the Mughals called these gardens a glimpse of paradise.
